Our Mission in Action

Our History

We first arrived in Zambia on 12 October 1982, led by Fr. Kazimierz (Casmir) Cichecki.

The pioneer group included 12 missionaries from Poland, among them Fr. Joseph Bem, Fr. John Bernas, Fr. Peter Boryczka, Fr. Paul Dziatkiewicz, Fr. Tadeusz Molendowski, Fr. Stanislaw Juszczyk, Fr. Eugene Szmyt, Fr. Henry Sak, Fr. Louis Karczewski, Fr. Joseph Ojczyk, and seminarian Stanislaw Jagodzinski.

Our first canonical houses were established in Luwingu, Chingola, and Kazembe, initially under the Warsaw Province. Zambia was later decreed a Delegation, with Fr. Cichecki as the first Delegate for Zambian Missions.

Expansion and Development

The initiative was part of “Project Africa”, launched during the 21st General Chapter in 1978, which intensified Salesian missionary efforts across the continent.

The ZMB Vice Province gradually expanded to include Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Botswana, becoming a vibrant missionary territory dedicated to youth education and evangelization.

Mission Focus

From the beginning, we have emphasized education, vocational training, and pastoral care, following Don Bosco’s charism of serving the young, especially the poor and marginalized.

Our presence grew through schools, technical institutes, parishes, youth centers, and social outreach programs, shaping generations of young leaders.

Today

The ZMB Vice Province continues to be a dynamic hub of Salesian activity in Southern Africa, anchored in Don Bosco’s motto: “Da mihi animas, cetera tolle” (“Give me souls, take away the rest”).

It remains committed to holistic youth development, blending faith, education, and community service.
